It was 1973 and grade 8 shop class when I was first exposed to the fine art of woodworking and completed my first project. That old “sailboat lamp” still looks and works great today!
After graduating from high school in 1978 and up until about 1987 I did very little woodworking. University and joining the work force got in the way. It seemed though I never did lose the love for woodworking.
I spend much of my spare time these days in the workshop located in my back yard here in Moncton. I outgrew my first shop, a 12 by 16 foot space pretty quick. Didn’t own as many tools back then... but the shop was still full. My new building built in 2002, is an 18 by 20 foot dedicated work shop...equipped with plenty of tools, a couple of lazy boys and cable TV. However I must say it is starting to feel a little cramped these days! For those of you contemplating a shop...you don’t want to build it twice!
My wife Chris, of nearly 20 years is a big supporter of mine and lends her own expertise when called upon...and when asked to throw another log in the wood stove is happy to do so!
In the summers when not at my day job I can usually be found walking the golf course or soaking up some sun at Parlee Beach....two other interests of mine. ! It is in the “7 or 8 month off season” when I work on my hobby...however I have a feeling I’ll be in the shop a little more very soon!
My wood working inspiration has come from many directions over the years....including fellow woodworkers from around the internet. The projects I have been working on these days include the very unique keepsake boxes. Created by first laminating various exotic hardwoods together to form a blank they are then cut free hand on my 14” General band saw to a specific shape. Then once again, they are cut then glued and finally sanded smooth. Though very time consuming these boxes invoke a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when completed. Their unique styles and ever changing wood grain make them a joy to look at.
Many of my customers have sent these creations away as gifts to friends, family and business partners all over the world. Recently 15 boxes were shipped to 12 different cities in the United States and other parts of Canada. One was sent to France several to London and Italy and one was being sent to Australia this past Christmas!
My father once said to me when I was little...if you are going to build something - you need to try and do it right! Well you quickly learn that when working with wood and power tools...you best do it right...amen Curley!
Whether I’m working on a new project or celebrating New Year’s... my time in the shop has been well spent!
Life’s been good to me so far!
