Caring for your Cutting Board
Since wood is a material that changes its size as it gains or loses moisture, it is very important to take proper care of your wood cutting board. Proper care will ensure long lasting usefulness and help maintain its integrity.
Never place your wood cutting board in the dishwater or immerse it entirely in water. Water adds unnecessary moisture and will seep into the pores and disrupt the woods texture. Constant exposure to water and moisture will cause the board to lose its shape. Should your board happen to get wet be sure to towel it dry immediately. Never let your board “air dry.”
After a good workout the best way to clean your wood cutting board is to simply wipe it off with a warm damp sponge using mild dish soap when necessary...just as you would clean any countertop!
Now comes the most important tip of all! It is very important to keep your wood cutting board oiled regulary with any food friendly cooking oil. You can tell when you need to oil it...it will feel dry to the touch and especially during the winter months your board will need to be oiled more frequently. At least a couple of times per month.
It is impossible to put too much oil on your board.
